The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently awarded Environmental Education Grants of up to $3,000 to four recipients in Beaver and Lawrence counties, according to Senator Elder Vogel.
In Beaver County, the Pennsylvania Association of Environmental Educators received a $3,000 grant. The Lawrence County recipients are: the Lawrence County Conservation District, $3,000; the Shenango Area School District, $2,997; and the Sarah Heinz House Association, $3,000.
The grant money may be used for teacher professional development; curriculum integration; outdoor learning resources, such as trails, shelters, streamside plantings and educational programming; transportation to field study sites; water chemistry testing equipment; and educational events.
The grant program was established by the Environmental Education Act of 1993, which mandates setting aside five percent of the pollution fines and penalties DEP collects annually for environmental education in Pennsylvania.
