Recognizing Vietnam War Veterans DayNine million Americans served during the Vietnam War era and 58,000 gave their lives. Sadly, because many people didn’t view the war favorably, Vietnam War veterans received a cold reception when they returned to American soil. Some were even deeply mistreated. March 29 marked the day in 1973 when the last United States troops left Vietnam. That same day, 591 American prisoners were released and returned to the United States. We recognized those who fought valiantly for our freedoms. We are grateful for their courage and sacrifices. Congrats to Local Litter Hawk Youth Award Recipients Maddie Griffin & Lili DresslerMaddie Griffin and Lili Dressler, from Rowan Elementary School, were selected as the 1st and 2nd place winners in the second-grade category for the Keep PA Beautiful Litter Hawk Youth Award Program. These young ladies then were invited our capitol building to receive these awards and see their winning artwork displayed for all to see! My office also presented them with certificates honoring this impressive accomplishment. Not only do Maddie and Lili attend the same school, but they are also in the same class! Pictured first is Maddie and pictured second is Lili. Harrisburg HighlightsWhile tackling two very busy session weeks, it is always a pleasure to meet with constituents and advocates who traveled to Harrisburg to either discuss important issues or be recognized for their achievements. Senate Acts Against False Emergency Threats at SchoolsThe Senate this week approved legislation to crack down on false emergency threats targeting schools, a move aimed at enhancing public safety and reducing the strain on emergency responders. The bill, which also passed the Senate in the previous legislative session, now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration. Senate Bill 96 would establish new felony penalties for individuals who make hoax emergency reports involving educational institutions. If signed into law, making a false report of an emergency threat to a school would be classified as a third-degree felony, and courts would be allowed to impose financial penalties to recover the costs incurred by taxpayers for emergency response efforts. The legislation comes in response to a troubling rise in hoax threats made against schools across Pennsylvania, which included Hopewell High School, causing fear among students and parents while diverting law enforcement and emergency personnel from real emergencies. Senate Bill 96 is part of a broader effort to safeguard schools and hold bad actors accountable.
